what is eczema?

Eczema is a series of skin conditions caused by an allergic reaction or immune system disorder. Symptoms include red skin, discoloration, and itchy patches very similar to dermatitis. In many cases, the inflammation itself is merely dermatitis. This may occur anywhere on your body, including your hands, face, neck, and other places. Atopic dermatitis is the most common form and is normally the result of an allergic reaction. This condition often starts in childhood. At Clear Lake Dermatology in League City and Webster, TX, our dermatologists will work to diagnose the underlying cause so that we can create a treatment program that works best for you.

what causes eczema?

Doctors are not entirely certain what causes eczema, but they believe it happens for a variety of reasons, including the environment, immune system issues, genetics, skin irritants, and skin barrier defects. Genetics often plays a significant role because certain genes can cause people to have very sensitive skin. A patient with relatives who suffer from asthma or allergies have a greater chance of developing eczema. These symptoms can also be triggered by respiratory infections, colds, or very stressful times.

WHAT DOES ECZEMA LOOK LIKE?

Eczema is often characterized by dry, itchy, red skin and persistent rashes. Generally, skin will start to itch before a rash develops. Many patients encounter patches of skin that are chronically itchy, dry, or cracked. These patches can appear anywhere but mostly occur on the face, neck, legs, and hands. With children, patches can appear on the inner creases of the knees and elbows. Once your skin is scratched, dry spots and open sores with scabs can develop and might become infected. Severe symptoms could include pus-filled blisters or even a yellow to light brown crust that develops over existing eczema spots, which might indicate a fungal infection.

how do you get rid of eczema?

Many patients treat eczema with a variety of prescribed or over-the-counter medications and ointments. Patients may use hydrocortisone creams and antihistamines, like Benadryl, to alleviate symptoms. In moderate to severe cases, we often recommend prescription medications, steroid creams, immunomodulatory medicines, or corticosteroid or oral steroids. For some severe cases, we may also use ultraviolet light therapy or laser treatment to treat affected areas. When other options have failed, immunosuppressants might be a good choice because these medications suppress the immune system and keep it from attacking the skin.
