Laser Hair Removal Procedure

The first step in performing laser hair removal is to apply a cold gel to the area being treated. The technician will give the patient protective eyewear so that laser beams will not damage the eyesight, and a tiny laser will be run over the area where hair is to be removed. This laser emits a tiny pulse that reaches deep below the top layer of skin-damaging, individual hair follicles, thereby slowing or reducing hair growth. Patients do not normally feel pain during this process.

In most cases, a series of treatments are needed accomplish permanent hair removal. Four or five sessions that are each a few weeks apart may occur. This normally results in permanent hair loss; however, hair follicles will occasionally repair themselves and begin growing hair again some months or years later. In this instance, a patient may need to undergo another series of treatments.

Laser Hair Removal Post-Treatment

After laser hair removal, some redness and swelling may be present in the treated area, which normally subsides after a few days. Hair does not fall out immediately after a laser treatment but will do so gradually over a period of about a month. During this time, patients may experience a slight irritation or itchiness. Scarring is a rare side effect, but patients should nonetheless be aware of this possibility.

Laser hair removal is performed on an outpatient basis, and those who undergo this procedure are able to resume normal activities immediately.
